Claude-Joseph Vernet was a French painter. His son Carle Vernet and daughter Marguerite Émilie Chalgrin were also painters. == Life and work == Vernet was born in Avignon. When only fourteen years of age he aided his father, Antoine Vernet, a skilled decorative painter, in the most important parts of his work. The panels of sedan chairs, however, could not satisfy his ambition, and Vernet left for Rome.

A Mediterranean Port or A Sea Port by Moonlight refers to two 1771 paintings of the same subject by the French painter Claude Joseph Vernet. They are now in the Museo Soumaya in Mexico City and the Louvre in Paris. The two paintings form part of a series of fifteen works by Vernet showing port scenes.
