Hans Holbein the Elder (c. 1460/65, 1524) was a German painter of the early German Renaissance. He was the father of painters Ambrosius and Hans the Younger. == Life == Holbein was born in the free imperial city of Augsburg (Germany), and died in Issenheim, Alsace (now France). He belonged to a celebrated family of painters; his father was Michael Holbein; his brother was Sigmund Holbein (died 1540).
